Fireball Adware Has Infected 1 in 5 Corporate Networks
” alt=”Fireball Malware Attack” width=”216″ height=”194″ />Researchers at the security firm Check Point have discovered a massive adware operation that’s taken control of web browsers on more than 250 million computers worldwide AND it can execute code on any of them. The new Malware is called Fireball. Not only does it hijack victim browsers to generate ad revenue for its originator Rafotech, it also enables remote code execution which can be used to harvest credentials or download additional malware.
Fireball is currently being bundled with free software program downloads and installs itself without the user’s knowledge or consent.
Check Point says that Fireball is being distributed and controlled by a China-based digital marketing agency called Rafotech. Rafotech denies any wrongdoing but that’s little comfort to those infected.
Security experts recommend deploying a run-time malware defense program that is frequently updated. We recommend our clients use one of the industry leaders in malware defense like Trend Micro, Symantec, Sophos or Kaspersky Labs. In our opinion, Trend Micro Worry-Free is the best choice for the small to medium sized business market.
